Background information, content
"Aenne BIERMANN (1898-1933) is considered one of the most important avant-garde photographers of the 20th century. Together with Bauhaus artists such as Lucia MOHOLY and Florence HENRI she was represented in the seminal exhibitions of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Franz ROH, an art critic and her former patron, dedicated her to the legendary 1930 'monograph' 'Anne Biermann. 60 photos'', designed by Jan TCHICOLD, which here appears as an annotated reprint.
As early as 1928, Franz ROH pointed to the noteworthy photo artist Aenne BIERMANN, who drew the attention of experts with her close-ups of plants. In the following years, the self-taught artist developed into a significant artist of photographic modernism, creating a haunting and aesthetically fascinating world of images in her works with near-sightedness, extreme detailing and contrasting lighting. She found her motifs mostly in the immediate vicinity: In addition to numerous still lifes from everyday objects as well as nature shots, she photographed her children, their object world and activities again and again. Many originals were lost in the Second World War, some of the 60 photos of this publication are included. The authorized reprint of the volume, supplemented by a contribution by the Aenne-BIERMANN connoisseur Hans-Michael Koetzle, pays homage to one of the great photo artists of modern times."
