Statement of the photographer, Christoph BANGERT
"In my experience, the two most essential characteristics of war are horror and absurdity." (© Christoph BANGERT)
Background information
German photojournalist Christoph BANGERT, who spent ten years documenting crises for international publications such as the New York Times, already examined our society's use of horrific images in the 2014 photo book 'War Porn'. He continues his trilogy, completed with the last volume, 'Rumors of War' 2021, with 'Hello Camel.
Content
In the photo volume 'Hello Camel' the German photographer Christoph BANGERT documents the bitter absurdity of war. He contrasts the clichéd notion of modern war as a fast-paced, dramatic and heroic event with his calm and tidy, yet equally strange and alien images of the wars in Afghanistan, Gaza, Darfur, Lebanon and Iraq. At the same time, the 'Hello Camel' series is a documentation of human endeavor to create something like normalcy in the face of violence and chaos." (slightly adapted text, © Kehrer Verlag, 2016)
