"The catalog volume 'John Heartfield. Book Design and Photomontage' features numerous color illustrations. It documents an exceptionally extensive collection of John HEARTFIELD's works, which makes it possible to gain an overview of his work as a photomontage and graphic designer. All titles are arranged in chronological order, and only within this are they subordinated to alphabetical order. In addition to photomontages and book covers, brochures, title pages, and other printed products, a separate chapter contains at least two-thirds of the issues of the 'Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung' (AIZ) and the 'Volks-Illustrierte' (VI) printed with John HEARTFIELD's photomontages. The individual works are recorded bibliographically and provided with explanations, which deal, for example, with the respective context of origin, the revisiting and further development of tendencies and motifs within his work, the sources of the photographs used, the relationship to other currents in graphic design, and, last but not least, the interplay between cover design and text. It draws on widely received standard works and bibliographies as well as other research literature." (© Red Antiquarian Bookshop, 2014)
