With his political collages, John HEARTFIELD (1891-1968) is one of the most innovative graphic artists in the Weimar Republic. His photo montages and collaged book covers, which have their origins in the Berlin Dada scene and are directed against fascism, are still explosive today.
"John HEARTFIELD is internationally famous for his political collages. With keen observation, wit and uncompromising attitude, he turned the original documentary character of the press photos used upside down and actively used his art visually and with pointed humor against war and fascism.
His animated films and his theater work are also discussed in the context of works of art, archival materials and working materials, supplemented by statements by contemporary artists that illuminate John HEARTFIELD's work in the age of fake news." (publisher's note, © Hirmer Verlag, 2020)
“The executioners in the country are very clear about what an invaluable weapon Heartfield's montage is. They know what enemy they have in the small, nondescript Johnny. They hate him like no other, and woe if they get hold of him!"
