Background information
"Magnum Photos, founded in 1947 by Robert CAPA, Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, George RODGER, David SEYMOUR and Bill VANDIVERT, is one of the world's most important photographic agencies. Once considered the earliest MAGNUM group exhibition, the show curated by L. Fritz Gruber for photokina in Cologne in the fall of 1956.
After more than fifty years, however, an exhibition has been rediscovered that was already shown in five Austrian cities in 1955/56: 'Magnum Photo. Face of Time'.
Content
The out-of-print publication 'MAGNUM's first' documents this exhibition in full for the first time. A total of eighty-three vintage prints by eight Magnum photographers - Werner BISCHOF, Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, Robert CAPA, Ernst HAAS, Erich LESSING, Jean MARQUIS, Inge MORATH and Marc RIBOUD - are reproduced in large format. The central theme of the show was 'photographic humanism': images of people and their habitats beyond sensationalism -taken by dedicated photojournalists who believed in the world-improving, educational impulses of authentic documentation."
