Background information
"In 1927 SANDER traveled to the island with a Cologne art historian who wanted to write a history of Sardinia and started an extensive photo campaign, which is a solitaire in SANDER's great work. It is the only longer stay abroad for the purpose of photography in his biography Fortunately for us, the pictures taken during this campaign remained unpublished because the book project broke up at the time.
In 2009, what was then missed was made up for. When he was traveling to Sardinia, SANDER had already tried out his recent photographic documentation project on the people, the architecture and the landscape of the Rhineland - his homeland. He went as an experienced modern photographer in Sardinia, a country that was imprisoned in farming life and completely foreign to him.
Today, since we have SANDER's picture treasure from Sardinia in our hands and in front of our eyes for the first time, two things move us: firstly, how little the photographer can pour what has been found into formally strict pictures - this is only possible in exceptional cases; usually the chaos of archaic reality prevails.
And then the connoisseurs of today's Sardinia will shed tears in the light of the state of the island preserved here in pictures. With his 80-year-old photographs, SANDER has become the archaeologist of living conditions and the shape of old, pre-modern Sardinia. "(publisher's note, © Schirmer / Mosel, 2009)
