Statement of the photographer, Hans HELFRITZ
"In the spring of 1932 I returned to Germany from my first trip to southern Arabia and published a book which I called 'Chicago of the Desert'. This volume is based on the result of my first trip to Hadramaut. Time, which did not stand still even around remote Arabia, brought about many changes in the southern countries of the peninsula; one only has to think of the war between Ibn Sa'ud and Imâm Jahya of Yemen. During this time, I had the privilege of visiting southern Arabia twice more. I was able to deepen many impressions of the first trip, so that I felt prompted to edit the text for this reason alone. Furthermore, I was given the opportunity to considerably expand the picture section at this point - the photographs were taken with a 'Leica'. It is precisely these rare photographs that should introduce us better than any words to a country that is quite distant to most of us, a country that is so fundamentally different from the northern regions of the great peninsula in its landscape, in its people and in their settlements.
