Background information

"On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the world image-shaping photo agency MAGNUM, this weighty work was published. Robert CAPA, David SEYMOUR, Henri CARTIER-BRESSON as well as Paul STRAND are only a few famous photographers out of dozens who have shaped the 20th century image consciousness. This voluminous volume of images and text (33 x 24 x 3 cm.) provides an overview of the impressive field of reportage photography commensurate with MAGNUM's significance.

In the texts accompanying the catalog volume 'Zeitblende. Five Decades of MAGNUM Photography', the three authors William Manchester ('Zeitblende'), Jean Lacouture ('The Founders') and Fred Ritchin ('What is Magnum?') describe the early years, the founders and what role Magnum played during this period. Over four hundred plates of images, some in color, illustrate the range of subjects and regions in which MAGNUM footgraphers have been active to this day. The appendix begins with short biographies of all Magnum photographers compiled by Stuart Alexander, as well as a selection of publications, some of which can already be found with images in the text "What is Magnum?" by Fred Ritchin.
