Über den britischen Fotografen Bill BRANDT (1904-1983)
Bill BRANDT (geb. in Hamburg als Hermann Wilhelm Brandt) war Fotograf & Fotojournalist. Viele seiner Werke haben einen wichtigen sozialen Kommentar, aber auch eine poetische Resonanz. Seine Landschaften und Akte sind dynamisch, intensiv und kraftvoll. Er zählt zu Großbritanniens einflussreichsten Fotograf:Innen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bill BRANDT wuchs während des Ersten Weltkriegs auf und verbrachte kurz nach dem Krieg einen Großteil seiner Jugend in einem Sanatorium in Davos. Dann reiste er nach Wien, wo ihm Ezra Pound anbot, ihn mit Man RAY bekannt zu machen, dessen Pariser Studio und Dunkelkammer er 1930 benutzen durfte. 1933 zog er nach London und begann, alle Schichten der britischen Gesellschaft zu dokumentieren. Diese Art der Dokumentation war zu dieser Zeit ungewöhnlich. Er veröffentlichte zwei Bücher und schrieb regelmäßig für Zeitschriften wie Lilliput, Picture Post und Harper's Bazaar. Im Auftrag des Informationsministeriums dokumentierte er 1940 die Bombenbunker der Londoner U-Bahn während des 'Blitz'. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs konzentrierte er sich auf viele Themen, vor allem auf Porträts & Landschaften. Anlässlich des Friedensschlusses 1945 begann er mit seinen Aktserien. Bill BRANDT verstarb 1983 in London.
