Background information
"Austrian Magnum photographer Inge MORATH studied with Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, Robert CAPA had her shoot 'Women of the World,' she photographed Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable for MAGNUM, Life and Vogue. Her photographs are considered icons of the 20th century. Shortly after her death (2002), nearly 10,000 of her early color images from the 1950s and '60s were discovered, when color photography was still frowned upon as alien to art.

The photo volume 'First Color' closes a gap in the œuvre of Inge MORATH and spans the arc from her Spanish photographs in 1954/55 (including bullfights in Pamplona) to the images of traveling people from Ireland, rural Romania in 1958 and her documentation of the Gaza Strip in 1960. Thus, this rich array of images allows us to trace the development of her style, her skill, her empathy and her unique ability to compose." (freely translated publisher's text, © Steidl Verlag, 2009)
