"'Since his breakthrough at the legendary documenta 5, curated by Harald Szeemann, Frank GERTSCH has received the highest honors in the art world with three participations in the Venice Biennale and solo exhibitions at the New York Museum of Modern Art, among others.
While his photorealistic paintings of the 1970s - from the family pictures to the situation pictures of other artists such as Luciano Castelli and Patti Smith - were condensed into portraits of generations and eras, with objects, protagonists and gestures always offering a concrete reference to the times, his large-format wood engravings since the 1980s have elicited something otherworldly, floating, almost enraptured from reality.
