Background information
"The photo book 'The Queen, the Chairman and I' contains a saga of love, hope and tragedy: a picture book that both uncovers family secrets and reveals the impact of political and economic forces on individuals Migration, Heritage and Empire.
The paternal grandfather of Kurt TONG was a deckhand who came to Hong Kong from Shanghai in 1911 after the fall of the last imperial Chinese dynasty. His mother's family were landlords in southern China. When they came to Hong Kong, they escaped certain death at the hands of Mao's advancing Communist armies. Kurt TONG himself grew up in Hong Kong and sang the British national anthem during his school years. At the age of 13, he moved to the UK to continue his education before returning to Hong Kong for good in 2012.
Content
For the photo book 'The Queen, the Chairman and I', Kurt TONG traced his family's history to find out how two of the most influential people in history, Queen Victoria and Chairman Mao, influenced them.
Giving equal importance to new photographs, found photographs, and writings, the work reconnects him to the Hong Kong of yesteryear through his extended family's memories and humanizes the political and social upheavals that brought his family to Hong Kong and eventually to Greater Britain." French description:
(publisher's note, © Dewi Lewis, 2019)
