Background information
"While photography dominates almost every type of publication today, the origins of this interaction have been forgotten: the path of the photograph into the book was long and accompanied by numerous technical problems, which makes the various creative solutions proposed by the pioneers all the more astonishing, which are presented in this volume on the design of photo books, 'FOTO. BUCH.KUNST.: Umbruch und Neuorientierung in der Buchgestaltung' for Austria in the period 1840-1940 by Monika Faber (ed.) as well as Erik Gornik, Kurt Kaindl, Markus Kristan, Astrid Mahler, Elisabeth Schmuttermeier, Hanna Schneck, Simon Weber-Unger as well as Amelie Zadeh.

The volume 'FOTO.BUCH.KUNST. Upheaval and Reorientation in Book Design. Österreich 1840-1940' with contributions by Monika Faber, Erik Gornik, Kurt Kaindl, Markus Kristan, Astrid Mahler, Elisabeth Schmuttermeier, Hanna Schneck, Simon Weber-Unger as well as Amelie Zadeh contains images of original photographs, proofs or book maquettes, which open up a new perspective on a previously unnoticed aspect of Austrian cultural history. This is characterized by manifold interconnections between scientific curiosity, industrial interests, artistic experiments and an educational policy committed to the Enlightenment project. An extraordinary panorama of innovative achievements develops along splendid volumes and advertising brochures, travel reports and X-ray atlases, artists' designs and publishing brochures. A broad spectrum of early photo books in Austria, to which an exhibition is now devoted for the first time, presents fascinating combinations of compelling photography, refined book design, and perfect craftsmanship."
