"Photo-Collages always take place in the photo book scene again and again, especially among the talents from the Netherlands or Poland. At this moment, I spontaneously think of Aaina TOUSSAINT, Veronicka GESICKA or Rafal MILACH.
Many photographers focus on surrealists. as well as the Japanese artist Toshiko OKANOUE, whose band 'The Miracle of Silence' is presented here.
'The Miracle of Silence' is a catalog published on the occasion of an exhibition in Tokyo. It includes works that emerged in the 1950s, when Japan experienced its economic miracle and began Western 'achievements' that flooded Japanese culture.
Toshiko OKANOUE dealt critically with the influences in her own way and chose for her photo collages pictures from the economy and societies of America and Europe, especially: Germany.
The bonds to Surrealism, as well as to Heartfield and Brecht are obvious. Nevertheless, even after more than sixty years, the pictures look fresh and very topical, where consumer criticism flares up again." (© Richard G. SPORLEDER)
"Toshiko OKANOUE was active in the 1950s, producing eye-catching collages made from magazine clippings.
The parallels between her compositions and aspects of European surrealism was purely coincidental at first, but after meeting Shuzo Takiguchi, the leader of the surrealist movement in Japan, her keen sensitivity to shape and distinct feminine sensibility evolved further.
OKANOUE began to use photos to form backgrounds to her images, in which buildings, landscapes, and other elements combine to create bizarre and mysterious spaces where dramas unfold.
Her expressive fragments, mementos of society and fashion which in turn reflect the era, are a major element in her creativity." (publisher's note, © Seigensha, 2019)
