Background information
The series 'Faces and Phases' by Zahele MUHOLI was shown at dOCUMENTA (13) and the 55th Venice Biennale and was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2015.
"In the photo book 'Faces and Phases 2006-14' Zanele MUHOLI embarks on a journey of 'visual activism' to ensure the visibility of black queer and transgender. Despite South Africa's progressive constitution and twenty years of democracy, black lesbians and transgender men remain the target of brutal hate crimes and so-called rapes.
Content
The more than 250 portraits in this book, 'Faces and Phases. 2006-2014' taken by Zanele MUHOLI over the past eight years and accompanied by moving testimonies, provide a compelling testimony to the lives and struggles of these people.
