"In this body of work, 'Beyond Maps and Atlases', Bertien VAN MANEN turns to Ireland.
"At first, working in Ireland I wasn’t sure what I was looking for. My husband had died. I dispensed with the people and reflected on the atmosphere. I was guided by a feeling and a search, a longing for some kind of meaning in a place of myths and legends. There was mystery and endlessness at the edge of a land beyond which is nothing but a vast expanse.’

"A book shot in several trips to Ireland after VAN MANEN lost her husband. I knew VAN MANEN for her intimate and subjective photographs of people, so this book’s dearth of human subjects took me by surprise. It is as instinctive, loose and raw as her previous work in Russia and China, but instead of searching for people, she turns to the landscape and nature.  I see the book as a form of grieving ritual, a mystical inquiry, a personal search for essence. With no text except a short poem by Seamus HEANEY on the final page, the images read like a visual poem.  This photographer’s version of The Year of Magical Thinking." "In questo nuovo corpus di lavori, 'Beyond Maps and Atlases', Bertien van MANEN guarda all'Irlanda. Bertien VAN MANEN dice: 'In un primo momento, lavorando in Irlanda, non ero sicura di quello che stavo cercando. Mio marito era morto. Ho fatto a meno della gente e riflettuto sull'atmosfera. Ero guidata da un sentimento e da una ricerca, un desiderio di un qualche tipo di significato in un luogo di miti e leggende. C'era mistero e infinito al confine di una terra oltre la quale non c'era altro che una vasta distesa'. Van Manen si è imbattuta nella fotografia quasi per caso, scattando foto dei suoi figli con una vecchia macchina fotografica. Non appena il suo lavoro è diventato pubblico è stata subito risucchiata nel mondo della fotografia di moda. Nel 1977 stanca di questo settore e attratta dalla fotografia documentaria di Robert Frank e Josef Koudelka, van Manen ha cominciato a esplorare il rapporto che si sviluppa tra se stessa e i suoi soggetti, mantenendo con loro una vicinanza e sviluppando uno stile fotografico molto personale."
