Background information
"The photo book gives photographic image sequences a visual and material contextualization and brings them into a sensually perceptible form. The book format, the materiality of the paper and the type of binding have just as much of an effect on the viewer as the selection of images, their positioning in the layout, typography and texts. With the texts in her volume 'Thinking the Photobook. A Practical Guide', the artist and theorist Bettina LOCKEMANN opens up an approach to the medium from a scientific point of view: considering the photo book as an independent object of art studies, phenomenological discussions here complement methodological trains of thought.
Content
As an important contribution to the research field 'photo book' Bettina LOCKEMANN elaborates in the volume 'Das Fotobuch denken. Eine Handreichung' (Thinking the Photobook. A Handbook), Bettina LOCKEMANN develops precise terms for the analysis of this medium. By means of a practice-oriented consideration of contemporary photobooks, this reader underscores the status of the photobook as a work in its own right." (© Hatje Cantz, 2022)
