Background information
"In 1955, members of the anti-apartheid movement passed the 'Freedom Charter', a ten-point program that was banned until 1990 and today forms an integral part of the South African constitution. Despite the historical mandate, the living conditions of residents of informal settlements have hardly improved over the past 20 years. 'Soccer City', Johannesburg's football stadium specially built for the 2010 World Cup, is less than ten kilometers as the crow flies. A ticket to the international market is more expensive than the whole set up of a cabin on the photos of Peter BIALOBRZESKI. The pictures tell of the desire to comfortably organize the home with the few resources available." (publisher's note, © Hatje Cantz, 2010)
