About the journalist, curator and photography expert Hans-Michael KOETZLE (*1953 in Ulm).
Hans-Michael KOETZLE studied German and history in Munich and describes himself as a 'freelance writer and journalist specializing in the history and aesthetics of photography'.
He conducts research on photography in the 20th century, which results in exhibitions he curates with accompanying publications. In 1996 he became editor-in-chief of Leica World magazine; he accompanied René BURRI for many years, working with him on book publications and exhibitions. He also worked intensively with F. C. GUNDLACH, René GROEBLI, Barbara KLEMM, Ulrich MACK, Charlotte MARCH and Will McBRIDE. In addition to monographic exhibitions and books, Hans-Michael Koetzle has published encyclopedic works. Currently he is working on the rediscovery of the Düsseldorf photographer Horst H. BAUMANN. On October 23, 2022, he was awarded the Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography (DGPh).
