Background information
"The period around 1980 was one of profound upheaval. A global arms race, rampant environmental destruction and rising unemployment fueled a general mood of doom, but also provided a surge of creativity. Punk and pop flourished wildly and influenced the artistic avant-garde. A colorful youth culture asserted itself as the motor of feminist and homosexual emancipation. In seven photographic positions, the catalog volume 'Deutschland um 1980: Fotografien aus einem fernen Land' (Germany around 1980: Photographs from a Faraway Land) approaches an eventful time: the division of Germany and the world into East and West as well as the scenario of nuclear war conjured up by the arms race called the peace movements in both German states onto the scene. Issues that are still relevant today, such as the equality of women and the fight for the environment and climate protection, came into focus.Content
