"August SANDER (1876-1964) is one of the big names in German and international photographic history, and with his project 'People of the Twentieth Century', which have been pursued for several decades, he set new standards in portrait photography that have never been seen before: idea, concept and execution large-scale enterprise, which was equally humanistic, sociologically and aesthetically motivated, has remained as unique as it has been inspirational for subsequent generations of photographers and artists.
SANDER's claim was to create a typological overall picture of his time: hundreds of individual and group portraits, arranged according to occupational, social or familial aspects, were intended to represent the various areas of society in a representative manner. The ambitious project took concrete form in the 1920s - correspondingly many photographs date back to the Weimar Republic - and should occupy SANDER until the 1950s, even into old age.
A first selection of his portrait photographs appeared in 1929: 'Antlitz der zeit (engl.: Face of Time), with a foreword by the writer Alfred DÖBLIN. As a preview of the large comprehensive work 'People of the 20th Century' thought was taken by the contemporaries, especially the literary and artistic avant-garde enthusiastically.
The 60 motifs depicted in it are also included in the present book 'Meisterwerke', supplemented by further significant portraits that document Sander's technical and stylistic mastery as well as his precise, unbiased view.
A novelty of our edition is that all illustrations are based on original prints, which have been produced and authorized by August Sander himself, so-called vintage prints. The image sections and desired tonal values defined by August SANDER are authentically reproduced here for the first time in the long history of SANDER's portrait work." (editor's note)
