Background information
In 1927, the Cologne photographer August SANDER traveled to the island with a Cologne art historian, Lothar Mathar, who wanted to write a history of Sardinia with 'Sardinien, das unbekannte Eiland'. The publication remained unrealized, but during the three-month stay between Porto Torres and Cagliari, a dense photographic chronicle of the Sardinian people and their culture was created: a look into the faces of the rural population, across landscapes and at the important architectural monuments such as the Romanesque basilica of San Gavino or the abbey church of Santissima Trinità di Saccargia.
Content
From the impressively unpretentious collection Eine Reise nach Sardinien' (A Trip to Sardinia) by August SANDER, published for the first time, this volume, which has long been out of print, brings together a representative selection of thirty motifs by this important pioneer of modern photography.
