Background information
The concept of the mono.kultur publication series, consisting of a combination of image and text sections, deals with the work of an artist in images as well as an interview in one issue. Graphically, the issues are limited to the essential, leaving as much room as possible for the power of words and images: two separate issues contain a) a personal and uncommented selection of works and b) an intensive and sophisticated interview.
The mono.kultur issue #37 is dedicated to the photojournalist and war reporter James NACHTWEY. Witness to the great conflicts and catastrophes of the last three decades - from the revolutions in South America and Eastern Europe to the famines of Africa, from 9/11 to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - the US-American photographer documents in his photographs the costs of wars, the tragedies of everyday life, the destruction and the scars. His reportages are published in magazines such as Time, National Geographic and Stern and have won numerous awards.
Content
The images included in the volume 'mono.kultur #37' challenge those in power by taking a merciless look at reality: at the impact of politics on human lives, but also at viewers by questioning our participation and opening our eyes. In a transcribed interview reproduced in English, James NACHTWEY talks about his initial difficulties with photography, the displaced reality of war, and how images can bring about resistance."
