"Can you make a book about Robert Wilson without focusing on the results of his work - sets, scenes, lights and projections?
Jo RÖTTGER did it and it has become an amazing book. He has accompanied Robert Wilson on his restless global flight. In the 'Watermill Center', Long Island, in his apartment in New York, during preparations and rehearsals for various productions in Warsaw, Paris, Berlin and Taiwan, when meeting dervish dancers in Istanbul and Athens, at the opening of the VOOM exhibition in New York.
The photographer stayed discreetly in the background and watched patiently. His pictures show the origin, the cornerstones and various figures of a complex coordinate system and they show how new facets are woven in with love, precision and great care. Stone by stone is set, as in a board game without beginning and end, not to define or hold immovable positions, but as a starting point or starting point for a constantly growing number of possible constellations. We see how energy is created and consumed and understand that everything has to stay in the flow and a lot has to be tried out if something good is to succeed.
The book is a great treat for the arts and, like a good theater evening, it leaves the audience with the feeling that they have a lot of work to do." (publisher's note, © Hannes WANDERER, Peperoni Books, 2009)
