Background information
"Kochi, State of Kerala, India - Monsoon Season. For 'Inside Out Kochi' German documentary photographer André LÜTZEN travelled to the port city in southwestern India. And as in the predecessor photo album 'Zhili Byli' with photographs from the Russian city of Arkhangelsk, he has documented the lives of local people, young and old residents, men and women, inside and out, private and public, and how they relate to them set up.
The climate determined by the monsoon plays a crucial role: wet roads, rain and the moisture hanging in the air. People hardly move, they lie, sit or stand. There is a sense of motionlessness and paralysis. But, and that's what his pictures say, it's not just the monsoon. The colonial past, the difficult economic situation that enables many to survive, the uncertain future of the region - all of this becomes painfully palpable. In some moments, however, people are completely at their own.
