Background information
"The Frankfurt theater photographer Abisag TÜLLMANN (1935-1996) has bequeathed her photographic documentation of the BEUYS action 'Titus Andronicus/Iphigenie', which the artist performed on May 29, 1969 during the 'experimenta' at the Theater am Turm in Frankfurt, as a coherent work to the Frankfurt Museum für Moderne Kunst. The action 'Titus Andronicus/Iphigenie' is of special significance in the work of Joseph BEUYS. It is the only action by the artist conceived for the experiential space of the theater and referring to plays - Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare and Iphigenie auf Tauris by Goethe - and one of two actions in which Joseph BEUYS acted with a living animal. The white horse, which was on stage with Joseph BEUYS, had a powerful aesthetic effect. This was also the feeling of the contemporary writers Botho Strauß and Peter Handke, who witnessed the action and described it for the German feuilletons.
