Background information
"The compendium 'Vier Frauen. Vier Lebensläufe: Fotografieren in der DDR' (Four women. Four CVs. Photographing in the GDR) focuses on four female photographers from Saxony - Christine STEPHAN-BROSCH (*1939), Evelyn KRULL (*1942), Gerdi SIPPEL (*1951) and May VOIGT (1960-2019) - who are representative of a large number of female photographers, some of whom have almost been forgotten.
Content
For the first time, the volume 'Vier Frauen. Vier Lebensläufe: Fotografieren in der DDR' shows their works together and placed in the context of their creation.
Christine STEPHAN-BROSCH (*1939) has been taking portraits of Saxon artists since the 1960s, capturing fleeting moments of everyday life. In her nude photography, Evelyn KRULL (*1942) uses a clear visual language to showcase the human body in the limelight. Gerdi SIPPEL (*1951) captures individual traces and processes of work. Meanwhile, the dark images by May VOIGT (1960-2019) deal with a deep emotionality. 'Vier Frauen. Vier Lebensläufe' locates these four very different positions in the context of their creation and asks how they deal with social and political circumstances." (© Sandstein, 2024)
