Background information
Gerhard RICHTER is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and best-known German artists alive today. Yet, although his paintings are widely exhibited, his editions have attracted relatively little public attention.
Content
This catalogue raisonné, compiled through intensive research over a period of many years by art historian Hubertus Butin, Gerhard RICHTER's former assistant, documents the full range of graphic and photographic editions as well as the artist's books, multiples, and editions in oil realized by the artist between 1965 and 2004. All works are presented in four-color illustrations for the first time, and three essays shed new light on the significance of gerhard RICHTER's editions within his oeuvre. In the editions, Gerhard RICHTER has developed an almost encyclopedic system of pictorial practice, subjecting artistic media, genres, and historical paradigms to wide-ranging analytical reflection. In this process, he channels his deliberations on the changing cultural meanings of image and representation into a critical examination of the complex conditions and possibilities of artistic production in this age.
