Background information
"Bleicke BLEICKEN spent almost his entire life on Sylt, the North Sea island that today is known as much for its beautiful beaches as for its prominent vacationers. The teacher and later mayor of Kampen/Sylt - began in the 1920s to record his home island and its inhabitants in pictures. Here, for the first time, photographs from his estate of around 3,600 photographs are presented to the general public. The main subjects of his work are the vast landscape, the dunes, the sea and the sky over Sylt. Water and sand, wind and light are his creative tools. The black-and-white photographs show Germany's most popular island as it is no longer known today. Through their artistic composition and as testimonies of times long past, they will captivate not only Sylt fans.

The photo book 'Sylt. Meine Insel' shows black and white photographs by Bleicke BLEICKEN from the first half of the 20th century. Family portraits alternate with experimental light studies, social documentary photography stands next to contemplative landscape scenes. The color images gathered here evoke memories and longing, taking us on a colorful journey back in time to the 1950s and 1960s." (somewhat adapted text, © Kehrer verlag, 2014)
