Background information
The catalog volume 'Contemporaries. August Sander und die Kunstszene der 20er Jahre im Rheinland' (August Sander and the Art Scene of the 1920s in the Rhineland) was published to accompany the highly acclaimed exhibition at the Josef-Haubrich-Kunsthalle, Cologne (May 19 to July 30, 2000, subsequently Kunsthalle Kiel), which documented the turbulent cultural scene of the 1920s in the Rhineland.
The central figure is the portrait photographer August SANDER; he spans artists of all disciplines and the two German art metropolises Berlin and Cologne. The core of the documentation is formed by artists of the Cologne Progressives (Heinrich Hörle, Franz Wilhelm Seiwert, Anton Räderscheidt and others).
Content
In addition to the photographic material, which is of interest to photo enthusiasts, the contributions by renowned authors make the picture and text volume 'Zeitgenossen. August Sander and the Art Scene of the 1920s in the Rhineland' an important publication on the cultural history of the Rhineland and testifies to the lively exchange with the contemporary Berlin art scene.
