Background informations
"Today, Gerda TARO is regarded as a pioneer of modern war photography and was forgotten for decades, alongside her colleague and life partner Robert CAPA. The photographer, born in Stuttgart in 1910 as Gerta Pohorylle, was a committed fighter against Hitler and Franco: almost all her pictures show the Spain of the revolution and the civil war and the fight against fascism. After Gerda TARO was briefly arrested in Germany in 1933, she fled into exile in Paris. There she established herself as a photographer with her companion Endre Friedmann. From then on, the two named themselves Gerda TARO and Robert CAPA.When the Spanish Civil War broke out in the summer of 1936, the photographer couple went to Spain. Gerda TARO filmed and photographed in almost all scenes of this war. She was the first war photographer to photograph in the midst of combat and the first to die in the war reportage. She was only 26 years old. TARO created some of the most dramatic and frequently published images of the Spanish Civil War.
At Gerda TARO's funeral, tens of thousands lined the streets.
