Background information
'Toiletpaper'
is an artist magazine created and produced by Maurizio CATTELAN and
Pierpaolo FERRARI, born from a passion or obsession they both cultivate:
Images. The magazine contains no text; each image springs from an idea -
often simple - and becomes the materialization of the artists' mental
outbursts through a complex staging of people.
Since its first issue
in June 2010, 'Toiletpaper' has created its own universe, marked by
ambiguous narratives and a disquieting imagination. It combines the
language of commercial photography with twisted narratives and
surrealistic images.
As a result, Toiletpaper magazine is itself a
work of art, challenging the boundaries of the contemporary art world
through its accessible form as a magazine and through its widespread
distribution. (...) Most recently, the photographs published in the
magazine were transferred to a variety of products and media to explore
the many ways in which images can live beyond the pages. The images in
'Toiletpaper' have been reviewed by weeklies and art magazines worldwide
and appeared in special issues of magazines such as Vice and Hunger. In
May 2012, 'Toiletpaper' was also exhibited at the High Line Billboard
in Chelsea, NYC, and in the same year images from the first six issues
were published in an anthology along with selected texts that made it
into the New York Times 'Top 10 Photo Books'. In June 2013, the images
of 'Toiletpaper' were displayed on the windows of the Palais de Tokyo
and in a special issue of Libération.
