Background information
"The building at Wilhelmstraße 44 was built between 1974 and 1978 as the embassy of the CSSR in the former GDR and is considered an icon of 'architecture brute'. Today, one part of the building is the representation of the Czech Republic in Berlin, another part is used by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. This unusual neighborhood gave rise to the idea for this book 'Berlin. Wilhelmstrasse 44' by the prominent BECHER student Candida HÖFER.
Content
The picture cycle 'Wilhelmstrasse 44' by Candida HÖFER and the essays by Michael Hagner & Anke te Heesen as well as by Monika Wagner, Daniel Tyradellis and Peter Geimer offer various approaches to a spatial situation that take up and alienate the immediate juxtaposition of scientific operations and everyday embassy life, representative architecture and the needs of researchers."
