Personal statement by Candida HÖFER
"The volume 'Düsseldorf' also shows my work as I do it now. So it's about work then and work now. It's about change." (Candida HÖFER)
Background information
"The Museum Kunstpalast showed an exhibition by Candida HÖFER for the first time in 2013. It offered an overview of seventy works created exclusively in Düsseldorf over the course of forty years. On display were large-format individual paintings, groups of paintings, projections and an early film by the artist, which she shot together with Tony Morgan in Düsseldorf's Da Forno ice cream parlor in 1975. Most of the works had never been seen in public before. Her work is closely linked to the city of Düsseldorf. Her first solo exhibition in a gallery took place here, and it is here that she has repeatedly come across new, very different motifs since beginning her studies at the art academy with Bernd BECHER. The photo book 'Düsseldorf' represents the beginning. But it is not only about the work at that time. (...)
Her work is characterized by her cool objectivity, her pronounced interest in structures and order in space and her precise grasp of details. In addition to large-format interiors, including those of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, as well as photographs of the interiors of various art institutions such as the Museum Kunstpalast or the Julia Stoschek Collection, the book / exhibition also shows pictures from her first photographic series 'Turks in Germany'."
