Background information
"Joachim BROHM (*1955) is one of the first artists of his generation in Germany to discover color photography for himself in the late 1970s. Taking photographs in color was not a matter of course at that time at the Folkwangschule in Essen, where he studied until 1983. The pioneers in this field were the USA, where photographers such as Stephen SHORE, William EGGLESTON and Bill CHRISTENBERRY innovatively expanded the artistic potential of color photography and soon made a name for themselves internationally under the label 'New Topographics'. Consequently, BROHM continued his studies at Ohio State University with Allan SEKULA, among others.
His subject is the periphery, those undefined urban fringe zones that are subject to constant change. He finds his motifs, which reveal the transition from cultural to natural landscapes and different urban developments, in Germany, France, Portugal, the USA and Japan. His work resembles an archaeological search for traces: every object, no matter how inconspicuous, every constellation of everyday life, no matter how unspectacular, is an indication of the processual, the transitory nature of such improvised living spaces, which are located between the past and the present. The motivic spectrum ranges from close-ups to cityscapes and recreational areas to wide panoramas of a silent, constantly reinventing topography.
