About the Hungarian photographer, Martin MUNKACSI (1896-1963)
Martin MUNKACSI (actually Márton Mermelstein) was an important reportage and fashion photographer of the 20th century. After working as a painter and sports reporter, he published pictures in Budapest daily newspapers and sports magazines in the 1920s and from 1927 also in various Berlin magazines. After his emigration (1934), he began his career in fashion photography in the USA and revolutionized it by implementing movement within the static medium of photography. In the sense of a 'new vision', his portrait and society photographs show a reality that was characterized by speed and technical progress, especially from the 1920s. His motto "Think while you shoot!" - that good photography is first created in the head - he inspired prominent photographers such as Henri CARTIER-BRESSON.
