"A physical demarcation of nature ends at the point where the sphere of the intellect begins and a new world of the spirit is opened to our view. It marks the boundary, but does not cross it." (© Alexander von Humboldt, 1845)"The aesthetics of science, nature and the materiality of things are recurring themes in Mårten LANGE's photo volume 'Another Language', his first major publication. Taking this fascination with nature even deeper, he combines images of flora, fauna and natural phenomena in an intimate and beautifully designed book, teasing a subtle narrative - a meteor crashes, a land mass is visible and a distant planet takes up the last page - but the book is more akin to the working method of a scientist collecting specimens. Together, the photographs create a cryptic and heterogeneous index of nature with recurring shapes, patterns and textures, the clarity and simplicity of the individual photographs juxtaposed with the enigmatic whole. Photographed in his characteristic B&W style, his subjects are isolated from their surroundings and take on sculptural qualities. These phenomena, which range from the sublime (lightning, mountains, stars) to the everyday (ducks, rocks, fish), become equally important through the democracy of the photographic treatment."
