Background information
"What do the Indian city of Chandigarh and the Moroccan metropolis of Casablanca have in common? Chandigarh, built by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane B. Drew together with Indian architects, and Casablanca, realized by Michel Ecochard and young Moroccan and French architects, are based on a European-American understanding of avant-garde architecture and urbanism. However, both cities have been significantly influenced and further developed by their own cultures.

This book of photographs, 'Casablanca Chandigarh: A Report on Modernization' reflects the urban reality in both metropolises with illustrations, plans and documents. Complemented by two photo essays by the French-Moroccan photo artist Yto BARRADA and the Japanese photographer Takashi HOMMA, it stimulates the discourse on the fusion of cultures and the effects of architecture on everyday life. In detailed texts by Tom Avermaete and Maristella Casciato, the book offers an expanded view of the potential and character of the modern city - also in the context of non-Western culture."
