Background informations
Robert CAPA is one of the great photographers of the 20th century. His images of Europe's theaters of war have left their mark on our memories. However, the photos that Capa took in Berlin in the summer of 1945 remained largely unknown. This is where the Hungarian-Jewish refugee's career began in 1931. After the liberation of Europe from National Socialism, he returned to Berlin in US uniform - an experience that marked a turning point in Robert CAPA's career as well as in his life. He documented his view of the destroyed city and its people, of Allied soldiers and Berliners. He photographed the black market in front of the Brandenburg Gate and the first Jewish New Year service in the liberated city for the American 'Life' magazine.
