"On the one hand there are the common houseplants as tamed nature brought indoors - cacti, palms, figs, rubber trees. They are combined with portraits and still lifes, which are often situationally comical, but also horrifying. On the other hand, the impression soon arises that these people are actually houseplants too - natural creatures thrown into life, more or less well protected by spines or a thick skin. They can blossom, be over-cared for or stand neglected and withered in the corner. Her compassion, which is linked to an astonishment at our strange lives, is evident in her specific view of everyday life. In her photo volume 'Zimmerpflanzen' (Houseplants), this special attitude enables Ute BEHREND to constantly find new images and surprising combinations that open up a new view of the world to the viewer."
