Background information
The photo book 'Architecture of Density' by Michael WOLF was sold out after its first publication in 2012 within a short period of time; it had previously been published as part of the two-book set 'Hong Kong Inside Outside'.
The series has won many awards and the photographs have also become a symbol for the megacity of Hong Kong, which has also been the photographer's adopted home from 2002 to 2019.
Content
"Michael WOLF has focused on the specific visual elements and depicted the dense life in one of the most densely populated cities in the world as no one has done before. For 'Architecture of Density' he has developed a distinctive style of photography. He removes any sky or horizon from the image and flattens the space until it becomes an unrelenting abstraction of urban sprawl from which there is no escape for the viewer's eye. Michael WOLF photographs decaying buildings in need of repair, brand new buildings under construction and covered with bamboo scaffolding, and fully occupied apartment complexes. His disorienting point of view gives the viewer the feeling that the buildings extend into infinity, which perhaps corresponds to the spatial experience of Hong Kong residents." This new edition of the title, now called 'Architecure of Density. Hingkong', also includes nine additional unpublished images from the archive of this unique photo series. For the book, Marc Feustel, whom Michael WOLF once called his 'ghostwriter', has written an essay.
