Personal statement by the photographer Michael SCHMIDT
'It was quite a conscious step to drive the pictures into the immeasurable gray, so that black and white do not actually appear in them anymore. (...) I thought that the world is not clearly defined but presents itself in many nuances.' (freely translated, © Michael SCHMIDT)
Background information
After the reissue of the legendary photo volume 'Waffenruhe' (1987, 2018) by Michael SCHMIDT, the long-out-of-print artist's book 'Berlin-Wedding' from 1978 appeared as re-issue in a second edition.
Content
In the photo volume 'Berlin-Wedding', Michael SCHMIDT photographs the district in a documentary style. Although the project was commissioned by the district office, Michael SCHMIDT formulates its artistic concept of the city and its inhabitants. Part of the implementation is the deliberate design of black-and-white photographs in a wide range of gray values. This trait was also implemented in the reissue. His shots all look like taken on an early, gloomy Sunday morning in winter. The streets are deserted, cleansed of life and as on the dissecting table. The vacant lots, the temporary buildings and the repaired houses refer to the impact of the Second World War and the associated existential shock of the people." (© Koenig, 2019)
