Background information
"'La Vucciria' is one of Palermo's oldest market districts and was founded 900 years ago by the Arabs who once ruled Sicily. Many people still live in run-down buildings that show the effects of World War II bombings as well as the devastating 2002 earthquake that devastated the area. Vucciria is now considered a run-down area where fruit vendors, traders, fishmongers and butchers have mostly disappeared. The few who live largely in the past yearn for bygone days when Vucciria was an important center for marketing and socializing. While Vucciria may have seen better days, it has recently taken on a new life. Today, it comes alive in the evenings when young people gather to meet friends, sample street food or enjoy the offerings of a new café, a simple glass of wine in the cool night air. Vucciria waits optimistically for what lies ahead." (freely translated, © 89books, 2019)
