"Artists often take a new turn in their final creative phase, their language and attitude change, other themes and motifs come to the fore. The Swiss photographer Jakob TUGGENER, on the other hand, remained true to himself and his work in an almost irritating way. Having already composed four unique books on the themes of spring, summer, fall and winter in the 1940s, he created completely new versions of these 'farmer's books' in 1973 and 1974, at the age of almost 70, under the title The 4 Seasons. They are dedicated to the simple life in the countryside, reflecting the recurring cycle of nature in sensitively observed, atmospherically charged, yet never picturesque images, and are at the same time a reflection on human life and transience. While the world and society changed fundamentally between 1940 and 1970 - life in the countryside no less than life in the city - he allowed himself to combine photographs from this entire period into a new, very personal epic. It is precisely this consistency in his work, this unwavering trust in the power of the images, that is one of the special qualities of the series and thus of the photo volume 'Die 4 Jahreszeiten'."
