Background information
"The temperature climbs above 104˚. Shimmering heat lies above the desert city. What can thrive on this patch of earth where nothing really should rise up? It is too hot and dry to live… Berlin-based photographer Kai BORNHÖFT wondered and traveled between 2006 and 2009 several times to the city of Dubai. These are his non-pictures of this non-place. Volatile snapshots: shadows on the negative film of his analog camera that affect you as if you are squinting before a relentless sun. Documentary is nothing here, but if you want you can recognize the realities of life: 'Exit Ghost' is the name Kai BORNHÖFT gave to his photo series because in Dubai he hit upon a model for life in which everything is both perfect and artificial. 'This model doesn’t allow for questions about life by the inhabitant,' he says, 'the ghosts of life' excluded,' as he calls it. Exit Ghost. But you can see it all in his work."
