Background information
Self-published in an edition of only 100 copies, the photo book 'Obval / Crash. 2014-2015' by Ukrainian photographer Kirill GOLOVCHENKO refers to a development in his home country Ukraine. There, the Ukrainian currency 'Hryvnia' lost so much value in the last 20 years, that this amounted to a crash. The answer of the photographer is his self-published book. The word 'OBVAL', derived from the term 'OBmin VALut' used in exchange offices, means - translated into English - 'crash', i.e.: accident, crash, or similar.
Kiril GOLOVCHENKO has been documenting his Ukrainian homeland and its people for 10 years now; while his books '7km' (2010) 'Kachalka' (2012) or even 'Bitter honeydew' (2015) also show humorous observations, his last self-published titles, 'Arbeitsbuch' and just 'OBVAL' are of a more serious nature. The images in this slim, fully illustrated publication are bathed in deep red, the same red that prevails in currency exchange offices.
