Background information
The out-of-print, self-published photo book 'Apathie. Erfurt/IX1155/82. Chromik eines Fluchtversuchs' (chronicle of an escape attempt) by Michael ANHALT depicts a part of German-German history. "Those who wanted to escape across the inner-German border had to plan carefully and be resourceful. Shortages and widespread surveillance by the State Security Service made the construction of flying machines (balloons, gliders and very small aircraft) particularly difficult. The photo book begins with this information. That escape attempt, which he experienced as a child with his family, failed. The parents were sent to prison, the children were separated, and the families were reunited only after they were pardoned and deported to the FRG. This quiet, very personal book was published in the media hubbub surrounding the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
