Background informations
"The New York-based photographer Bill PERLMUTTER was stationed in Europe as a US Army photographer from 1954. In December 1954, the then 22-year-old photographer boarded the troop ship to Germany to work for American Army magazines. He had never left the United States before and now he was looking forward to the Europe to be photographed and to visiting all those wonderful places he had read about or seen in films. Around sixty years after they were created, the photos show PERLMUTTER's flair for that special moment. In this way, each individual motif becomes a living piece of mosaic of memory that reports very precisely about the time, but also about very personal encounters.
Thanks to this intuitive ability of the photographer, his pictures have an effect beyond the historical moment and still make his work appear to be extremely lively and worth seeing." (publisher's note, © Seltmann, 2014)
