Background information
"The Swiss photographer René BURRI (1933-2014) was where history took place. His photographs of the Vietnam War in the 1960s, the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War have shaped our image of current events to this day. His portrait of Ernesto Che Guevara smoking a cigar made him famous and shaped political and social imaginations. As a photojournalist and member of the famous MAGNUM Agency, he traveled the world, taking portraits of politicians, artists, architects and other important personalities. As a Swiss national, he was able to gain access to otherwise closed countries. His photo reportages on life in the GDR caused a sensation well into the 1990s. His sensitivity for contrasts and his extraordinary feeling for the all-too-human in everyday life lend his photographs a clear, unique signature; they are touching because of his special style.
On the occasion of the exhibition 'René Burri - Explosions of Sight', the illustrated book of the same name was published - a special gift for those interested in art and contemporary history.
Content
For the first time, the Musée de l'Elysée is providing an insight into the entire oeuvre of this exceptional photographer with the biographical illustrated book 'René Burri - Explosion of Vision'. It shows him up close, his life and his work, and probably in its entirety, as it contains well-known images as well as rich, previously unpublished material from his estate. It also documents the diversity of the Swiss photographer, presenting not only photographs but also his designs for books, exhibition projects, travel diaries, collages and watercolors."
