Background information, content
As the title 'Stars and Stripes' suggests, this is a photo book about the United States of America. It contains color photographs by Takashi HOMMA, taken by the prominent Japanese photographer on his forays through New York between December 26, 2001 and January 5, 2002, shortly after the September 11 attacks - a time when the 21st century was divided before and after this event.
The photographs bear the traces of a tragedy that occurred just a few months earlier. The many expressions of sympathy and faded bouquets of flowers are still shocking today. On the other hand, the pictures document everyday life. An airplane hovering in the middle of a clear sky or a picture of a New York skyscraper that still looks spectacular are just notes from tourists that would have no meaning without September 11.
